One Piece Slot Master - Chapter 13
Chapter 13: The Whale and the Lighthouse Keeper
The immediate aftermath of their tumultuous descent from Reverse Mountain was a chaotic symphony of creaking wood, sloshing water, and the spluttering coughs of the soaked Straw Hat crew. The Going Merry, hardy little caravel that she was, bobbed unsteadily on the unfamiliar waters of the Grand Line, her sheep figurehead looking remarkably unfazed despite having just surfed down a mountain of water.
Jack, still gripping the railing with white knuckles, took a deep, shuddering breath of the new air. It felt different, charged with an almost electric vitality, carrying strange, exotic scents he couldn’t quite place. The sky above was a canvas of bizarre cloud formations he’d only ever seen in Oda’s artwork – some stretched like ribbons, others puffed like impossible cotton candy, and in the far distance, a towering cumulonimbus flashed with internal lightning despite the otherwise clear day.
“We… we made it,” Nami gasped, pushing her wet orange hair from her face, her eyes wide with a mixture of relief and the dawning excitement of a navigator facing the ultimate challenge. She tapped her compass; the needle was spinning erratically, utterly useless. “The magnetic fields here are already insane. This is definitely the Grand Line!”
Luffy, of course, was ecstatic. “THAT WAS AWESOME! LET’S DO IT AGAIN!” he bellowed, shaking water from his straw hat like an exuberant dog.
“Absolutely not!” Nami shrieked, whacking him on the head.
Zoro was methodically checking his swords for water damage, while Sanji, after ensuring Nami was unharmed, was already muttering about what kind of “Grand Line Welcome Feast” he could whip up. Usopp was kissing the deck of the Merry. “We’re alive! Oh, sweet, sturdy planks of the Going Merry, you saved us all!”
Jack allowed himself a moment to just absorb it all.
The Grand Line.
He was actually here.
Their brief respite was shattered by a sound, a sound so deep and resonant it seemed to vibrate through the very atoms of the air and sea. It was a mournful, colossal MOOOOOOOOAN, impossibly loud, impossibly close. Simultaneously, a vast shadow fell over the Going Merry, plunging them into an eerie twilight.
“W-what was that?!” Usopp shrieked, leaping to his feet, his earlier relief forgotten.
The sea before them began to churn, to boil, and then, with a displacement of water that sent the Merry rocking violently, an island rose from the depths. No, not an island. It was a creature. A creature of such stupefying, monumental scale that it dwarfed anything Jack could have imagined.
A whale. An island-sized whale, its head scarred with countless battles, its single visible eye as large as the Going Merry itself.
Laboon.
“A… A WHAAAAAAAAALE!” Luffy’s initial shock rapidly transformed into boundless excitement. “IT’S HUGE! SO COOL!”
Nami screamed. “IT’S GOING TO EAT US! TURN AROUND! TURN AROUND!”
But there was no turning around. Laboon, seemingly agitated by something, let out another mournful bellow and then, with horrifying speed for a creature its size, opened a maw that was a cavernous abyss, a dark void lined with baleen plates that looked like the gates of some watery underworld.
The Going Merry, caught in the irresistible vortex of indrawn water and air, was sucked helplessly towards the darkness.
“EVERYONE HOLD ON TO SOMETHING!” Zoro roared, bracing himself against the mast.
Jack grabbed the nearest solid object – the railing again – his mind a maelstrom of knowing what was coming and the sheer terror of experiencing it. The light vanished. They were plunged into a roaring, watery blackness, the ship tossed and turned like a toy. He heard Luffy laughing, Usopp screaming, Nami yelling, the creak and groan of the Merry’s timbers.
Then, just as suddenly as it began, the violent motion ceased. With a final lurch and a great splash, the Going Merry settled into surprisingly calm waters.
Blinking against the sudden, dim light, Jack found himself in the most surreal environment he had ever witnessed. They were floating on an inland sea, the “sky” above them a vast, curved expanse painted with clouds and a sun, clearly artificial. Strange, metallic walkways lined the “shore” of this internal ocean, and in the distance, nestled on a man-made island, was a quaint little house with a lighthouse spire. The air was warm, humid, and carried a faint, oddly organic, briny scent.
“Where… where are we?” Nami whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
“Shishishi! We’re inside the whale!” Luffy proclaimed, already clambering onto the railing to get a better look. “This is awesome!”
Usopp was curled in a ball, muttering about being digested. Sanji was trying to light a cigarette, his hands shaking slightly. Zoro was scanning their surroundings, his guard up.
“Well, well, what have we here?” a gruff voice suddenly called out. “More flies caught in the stomach?”
From the small island, an old man emerged from the lighthouse. He was surprisingly spry, with a weathered face, a flower blooming jauntily on his balding head, and eyes that held a glint of weary amusement. He carried a massive harpoon gun with practiced ease.
Crocus.
“Who are you, old man?!” Luffy called out. “Is this your whale?”
Crocus let out a huff. “Impudent brats. This is Laboon. And I’m Crocus, the lighthouse keeper of Twin Capes, and currently, his doctor. You’ve just been swallowed. Happens more often than you’d think, with ships fresh off Reverse Mountain.” He gestured towards a massive, scarred-over iron gateway embedded in the “sky” wall. “That’s one of my attempts to give him an exit. Doesn’t always work.”
As Crocus began to explain their predicament and the basics of life inside a giant, lovesick whale, Jack observed him intently. The old man, despite his eccentric appearance and gruff demeanor, carried himself with an undeniable aura of calm competence. There was a depth to his gaze, a subtle power in his stance that hinted at a life far more extraordinary than that of a simple lighthouse keeper.
Jack’s intuition, sharpened by his own growing strength and the instincts from his templates, told him this man was significant. His System had been quiet about simple environmental features, but people of note always triggered something.
An opportunity arose as Crocus, after a brief, violent encounter with a giant squid that had also been swallowed (which Crocus dispatched with a well-aimed harpoon from his perch), came aboard the Merry to inspect it for “stomach-acid damage.” He offered a gruff but not unkind assessment. “She’s a tough little ship. Might survive a while.”
As Crocus leaned down to tap a section of the hull, Jack, feigning to help steady a swaying lantern nearby, allowed his hand to briefly, “accidentally,” brush against the old man’s arm.
The System, as expected, flared to life.
[New Template Acquired: Crocus (Twin Capes Lighthouse Keeper – Former Roger Pirate Doctor)]
The icon depicted Crocus with his flower and a knowing look.
[Core Talents: Medical Expertise (Master – Derived from Legendary Crew Experience & Decades of Practice), Haki (Armament – Adept: Level 3), Haki (Observation – Adept: Level 3), Immense Willpower & Resilience, Botanical Knowledge (Advanced – Medical Herbs & Toxins)]
[Skills: Surgery (Master), Pharmacology (Expert), Harpoon Proficiency (Expert), Ship Maintenance (Basic), Painting (Proficient – Interior Sky), Brewing (Specialized – Laboon’s Tranquilizers)]
Jack’s mind reeled. Roger Pirate Doctor! Armament and Observation Haki, Level 3! Masterful medical knowledge! This was a treasure trove. But before he could even begin to process the full implications of Crocus’s past, another, even more significant series of notifications seized his attention, flashing with an urgent, system-altering importance.
[HAKI ATTRIBUTE DETECTED IN ACQUIRED TEMPLATE!]
[CONGRATULATIONS, USER! HAKI SYSTEM UNLOCKED!]
A new section appeared in his System interface, glowing with a faint, internal light.
[New Innate Attribute: ‘Haki Potential’ – Current Level: 0 (0/1)]
[To utilize Haki skills derived from acquired templates (e.g., Crocus’s Armament Haki Level 3, Observation Haki Level 3), your personal ‘Haki Potential’ attribute must reach a minimum threshold. Example: Level 100 ‘Haki Potential’ required to begin manifesting Adept Level 3 Haki skills. Higher Haki skill levels from templates will require correspondingly higher personal ‘Haki Potential’ levels.]
[Method to Increase ‘Haki Potential’: Dedicated Meditation (primary for foundational growth), Exposure to Active Haki Users (catalytic), Extreme Willpower Contests (synergistic), Sustained Life-or-Death Battle Stress (minor chance, high risk).]
[Note: Crocus’s Haki skills are currently UNUSABLE due to insufficient personal ‘Haki Potential’ Level. Begin meditation to cultivate this attribute.]
Jack stared at the notifications, his thoughts a whirlwind.
Haki.
The spiritual power that allowed individuals to exert their will over others, to sense presences, to clad themselves in invisible armor. It was one of the defining power systems of the New World, and his System had just unlocked his potential to learn it. He couldn’t use Crocus’s Haki yet – his own Haki Potential was at absolute zero – but the path was there.
Meditation.
A new form of training, a new avenue for growth beyond raw physical power or Devil Fruit mimicry.
He carefully moved the [Crocus Template] to his storage, his mind already racing with the implications. The Grand Line was already proving to be a place of unbelievable encounters and game-changing revelations.
Crocus, oblivious to the monumental internal shift Jack had just experienced, continued his gruff explanations about Laboon’s sorrowful history, his decades-long vigil, and his own attempts to care for the colossal whale. Luffy, Usopp, and Nami were bombarding him with questions, their earlier fear giving way to curiosity and, in Luffy’s case, a dawning, empathetic anger on Laboon’s behalf.
Jack listened with half an ear, his gaze fixed on the old doctor with a newfound respect and a burgeoning sense of anticipation. Crocus wasn’t just a grumpy lighthouse keeper; he was a Haki user, a former Roger Pirate, a living link to the Age of Legends. And he had just, unknowingly, opened a door to a whole new dimension of power for Jack.
