Haki Monster in One Piece World - Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The Blue Screen of WTF?
The chilling realization settled over Mike like a physical weight, heavier than the humid air, colder than the stream water still clinging to his face. Not Earth. The words echoed in the hollow space where his assumptions about reality used to be. He stayed kneeling by the water’s edge for a long moment, the reflection mocking him with its impossible juxtaposition – familiar self, alien world.
But survival instinct, even when battered and confused, is a powerful force. The water had slaked his thirst, but his stomach twisted with a hunger that was becoming painful. Adrenaline from the beetle chase and the subsequent terror had burned through whatever energy reserves he’d had. He felt weak, shaky, and acutely aware that hiding and having an existential crisis wouldn’t keep him alive for long.
Okay, priorities, he thought, forcing himself to stand up, legs trembling slightly. Food. Find something edible that won’t kill me. Then… figure out everything else. Absolutely everything. Easier said than done in a world where dog-sized beetles tried to eat you and plants looked like they belonged on an acid trip.
He scanned the immediate vicinity, eyes darting nervously towards anything that rustled or cast a deep shadow. What could he even eat here? Those giant pulsating mushrooms looked distinctly unfriendly. The vibrant flowers probably secreted poison. Could he risk eating the same berries he’d seen weird, six-legged squirrel-things nibbling on earlier? Or would they react differently in his system?
His mind raced, cycling through possibilities, trying desperately to formulate a plan, any plan. How could he figure this out? Was there anyone else here? Were they friendly? Unfriendly seemed more likely, given the beetle. Was there some way back? How did he even get here? Was this another dimension? An alien planet? A particularly vivid coma dream?
It was as he wrestled with these frantic, unanswerable questions, frustration mounting alongside his fear and hunger, that it happened.
Ping.
The sound wasn’t auditory, not really. It was clearer than hearing, manifesting directly inside his head – a single, clean, distinct chime. He flinched, startled, looking around wildly. Had something unseen snuck up on him?
Then, the world flickered. Not the physical world, but his perception of it. overlaying his vision, like a heads-up display in a video game he hadn’t signed up for, a semi-transparent blue rectangle materialized. It shimmered slightly, hovering about two feet in front of his face, remaining perfectly steady regardless of how he moved his head or eyes.
Inside the rectangle, crisp white text began to appear, typing itself out with silent efficiency:
[Welcome, Host!]
[Scanning Host Body… Please wait.]
Mike stared, mouth agape. His heart, which had only just settled into a merely terrified rhythm, kicked back into overdrive. “Okay,” he whispered, voice cracking. “Definitely hallucinating now. Concussion’s worse than I thought. Or maybe those purple mushroom spores…”
A faint, almost imperceptible tingling sensation swept through his body, like static electricity dancing across his skin. It wasn’t unpleasant, just… weird. On the blue screen, the text updated:
[Scan Complete. Host identified: Human Male, Species Standard. Baseline physical parameters below average for native environment. Moderate fatigue detected.]
[Initiating Novice Gift Pack Protocol…]
[Novice Gift Pack Granted!]
[Skill: Conqueror’s Haki Lv.1 (0%) Acquired!]
[Skill: Armament Haki Lv.1 (0%) Acquired!]
[Skill: Observation Haki Lv.1 (0%) Acquired!]
[Proficiency System Activated!]
Mike blinked. He read the lines again. And again. “Haki?” he breathed. The word was nonsensical in the context of reality, yet disturbingly familiar. “Like… like One Piece Haki? Conqueror’s, Armament, Observation?” His mind, already reeling, tried to grapple with this new, impossible piece of information. Was this world somehow related to the manga he’d read years ago? Was that even possible? Or was his stressed brain just latching onto familiar concepts?
Before he could spiral further down that rabbit hole, the blue screen flickered again, the text replaced by a new layout, looking suspiciously like a character status page from an RPG.

He stared at the screen, a tumultuous mix of emotions churning within him. Disbelief warred with a desperate, irrational flicker of hope. A system? Levels? Skills? It was insane, utterly insane… but it was something. Something concrete in this incomprehensible world. Something that implied rules, progression, maybe even a chance.
Then he processed the actual numbers. “Level zero?!” he exclaimed aloud, forgetting his caution for a moment. “Seriously? Physique Level Zero, Haki Level Zero? What does that even mean? Am I literally starting from nothing?” The zero experience points next to the levels seemed to mock him. And ‘below average for native environment’? That didn’t sound promising at all. The 38% Fatigue seemed chillingly accurate, though; he felt drained to his core.
The skills list was both thrilling and daunting. Haki – actual Haki, apparently. But Level 1, with 0 proficiency out of 1000. It sounded like a long grind ahead.
As if sensing his confusion (or perhaps it was programmed to do so), when his mental focus lingered on the ‘Core Attributes’ section, new text boxes popped up, explaining the terms.
[Physique Attribute:] Governs the Host’s raw physical capabilities, including Strength, Speed, Agility, Durability, and physical Stamina reserves. Higher levels increase all related parameters and reduce the rate at which Fatigue accumulates from physical exertion. Stamina is consumed when utilizing certain physical skills or Devil Fruit abilities (if acquired). Current Level: 0.
[Haki Attribute:] Represents the Host’s pool of spiritual energy or willpower, the fuel for all Haki-based skills. Higher levels increase the total Haki pool, allowing for longer or more frequent use of Haki skills, and reduce the rate at which Fatigue accumulates from Haki usage. Current Level: 0.
Mike absorbed the information slowly. Okay, so ‘Physique’ was his body, ‘Haki’ was his spirit energy, basically. Both were currently at rock bottom, Level Zero. That explained why running from the beetle felt like it nearly killed him. The system itself confirmed he was physically weak for this place. And his Haki pool? Non-existent, apparently. The skills were gifts, but he had no base ‘Haki’ stat to power them properly yet. Great.
His attention shifted to the ‘Skills’ list. He focused on ‘Armament Haki’, and another description obligingly appeared.
[Armament Haki (Busoshoku Haki): Lv.1 (0/1000 Proficiency)] Allows the Host to create invisible armor around themselves by manifesting their spirit. Provides significant offensive and defensive capabilities, capable of striking intangible entities or bypassing certain defenses. At Level 1, manifestation is unstable and inconsistent. Successful activation is not guaranteed. Requires Haki energy and induces Fatigue.
Invisible armor… strike intangible things… It sounded amazing. Then came the catch: unstable and inconsistent. Not guaranteed. So, basically, it might work, or it might not. Like trying to start a dodgy old car on a cold morning. He remembered punching the tree earlier and feeling nothing but pain – case in point.
He moved on, focusing on ‘Observation Haki’.
[Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku Haki): Lv.1 (0/1000 Proficiency)] Grants the Host an extrasensory perception, often described as a ‘sixth sense’. Allows sensing the presence, relative strength, and emotions of others within a limited range. With sufficient skill, can grant limited precognitive insight into immediate future actions. At Level 1, sensory input is faint, vague, and inconsistent. Successful activation or interpretation is not guaranteed. Requires Haki energy and induces Fatigue.
Sixth sense… sense presence, strength, emotions… limited precognition? This sounded incredibly useful for survival, especially the ‘sensing presence’ part. But again, the Lv.1 caveat: faint, vague, inconsistent. He thought back to the headache he got trying to use it earlier. Maybe that was the ‘faint, vague’ input overload? Or just failure.
Finally, he focused on the last, and perhaps most bewildering, skill: ‘Conqueror’s Haki’.
[Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku Haki): Lv.1 (0/1000 Proficiency)] A rare form of Haki manifested only by those possessing the qualities of a ‘King’. Allows the Host to assert their willpower over others, dominating their spirit. Can cause individuals of weaker will to be intimidated, mentally overwhelmed, or lose consciousness entirely. Because of system, it can be practiced by constantly repeating. At Level 1, range and effect are minimal, control is severely lacking, and activation may be involuntary under duress. Successful conscious activation is not guaranteed. Induces significant Fatigue.
Mike’s eyes widened. Qualities of a King? Assert willpower? Knock people out? This sounded orders of magnitude different from the other two.
That was… intimidating. He remembered the bird falling out of the tree earlier, the weird pressure he felt when he got angry during the beetle chase. Was that this? Uncontrolled, accidental bursts of… kingliness? The thought was absurd.
“Me? Qualities of a King? I couldn’t even decide what pizza to order last night,” he muttered dryly. The ‘severely lacking control’ and ‘involuntary activation’ parts were deeply concerning.
He stared at the silent blue screen, hovering patiently in his vision. It was all there – status, attributes, skills, descriptions. A game interface overlaid onto a lethal reality. Part of him still screamed it was a hallucination, a complex delusion brought on by trauma and head injury.
But another part, the part that had felt the ping, the part that recognized the uncanny familiarity of ‘Haki’, the part clinging desperately to any hope, whispered that this was real. It was insane, impossible, but real. And if it was real… it was a lifeline. A tool. A path forward, maybe even a path back.
Hope, sharp and potent, pierced through the fear. He had powers. Okay, Level 1, mostly useless powers, and Level 0 stats to back them up, but still. Powers. The kind you read about in manga. The Proficiency System implied he could get better, stronger. Level up.
A sudden grin split his face, manic and slightly unhinged. “Okay. Okay, Universe, or whatever cosmic entity is messing with me,” he said to the silent jungle, his voice raspy but filled with newfound energy. “You drop me in nightmare land, give me bugger-all physical stats, but you also give me space magic and a level-up system? Is this some kind of joke? A test?”
He addressed the blue screen directly. “Alright, System! What’s the tutorial? How do I gain proficiency? How do I level up Physique and Haki? Is there a help menu? Settings? Anything?”
He waited. The blue screen remained unchanged, displaying his pathetic stats and unreliable skills. No voice answered. No new text appeared.
He tried thinking the commands. ‘System, show tutorial.’ ‘Help.’ ‘Options menu.’ ‘Explain proficiency gain.’
Nothing.
He waved his hand through the interface; it passed through without resistance, the image remaining perfectly stable in his vision. He tried ‘touching’ imagined buttons on the screen. Still nothing.
The hopeful energy began to drain away, replaced by a dawning, slightly frustrating realization. The System wasn’t Cortana. It wasn’t JARVIS. It wasn’t a helpful AI companion. It was just… a system. A passive interface displaying information and tracking progress. It had given him the tools, dumped the instruction manual (of sorts) via the descriptions, and now it was silent.
“So… no help then?” he asked the unresponsive screen. “I just… have to figure it all out myself? How to train Haki without knocking myself out from fatigue? How to raise my ‘Physique’ from zero without getting eaten? How to gain ‘proficiency’ or ‘EXP’?”
The silence was his only answer.
He sighed, running a hand through his grimy hair. The initial thrill of discovering the system gave way to the daunting reality of his situation. It was a powerful gift, potentially world-altering, but it came with no instructions beyond the absolute basics. He was still Level 0, stranded, starving, and alone in a hostile world. The System was a tool, maybe even the tool for survival, but it wouldn’t hold his hand.
His stomach growled again, a painful reminder of his immediate priority. “Okay, Mike,” he muttered, pushing himself fully upright. “One problem at a time. Figure out the magic system later. Step one: Don’t starve.”
He looked at the silent blue screen one last time, then forced his attention back to the alien jungle around him. The fear was still there, a cold knot in his gut, but now it was tinged with something else – a sliver of determination, fueled by the bizarre hope the System offered. He had Haki, level 1 or not. He had a system, confusing or not. It wasn’t much, but it was infinitely more than he’d had five minutes ago.
Now, he just had to survive long enough to figure out how to use it. And find something, anything, that looked remotely edible.
